Flooding. Not good for rowers
Saturday, August 14, 2010 at 2:35PM This past year has not been a good one for rowers in central Iowa. The season started off on a bad foot when the a heat wave caused a rapid melt of the snow and ice. Snow and ice that was from an unusually high amount of snowfall over the winter. All of the water caused the Saylorville Reservoir to get really close to an uncontrolled release. All of the excess water needed to go downstream and so the river swelled dangerously close to the local boathouse. My club evacuated and returned to a dry boathouse about a month later. Everything seemed to go well until heavy rains in late June caused Saylorville to flood over the spillway. This time the boathouse wasn't so lucky. We did managed to move the equipment out, but water did make its way into the building about 1.5 feet up. Since late June there hasn't been any rowing on the river due to flooding and high water. Every time the river stage forecast shows the level going down to a level that can be rowed safely, a storm hits and pushes the level up.
We have a regatta coming up at the end of September, but I hope we can make it work on some body of water as the river doesn't seem to be ready for us.
