Darjeeling no more?
According to The Statesman, one of the oldest English newspapers in India, We might be calling Darjeeling tea, Gorkhaland tea.
In an article on The Statesman's web site, the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM), a political party in India that is fighting for separate statehood within India for the Darjeeling district and Dooars in north Bengal, headed by Mr. Bimal Gurung stands rigid on renaming the tea produced in the Darjeeling hills to Gorkhaland tea. In addition, the tea produced in the Darjeeling hills must not be mixed with other brands. In Mr Gurung's own words, "Our tea must be kept free from outside contamination."
It will be interesting to see how this pans out.
The latest news is that the GJM is going to start collecting a "tea tax" for tea produced in the hills of Darjeeling. This is the latest in the efforts of the GJM to get Gorkhaland noted as a separate state.
